Long Duration Energy Storage is needed in European energy markets to improve energy security and reduce total system costs, including energy generation and infrastructure. Many services provided by LDES technologies, such as curtailment reduction, congestion reduction, and power quality are still being taken for granted and need to be considered in the upcoming EU’s decisions in the Energy Market Design Reform and the Green Deal Industrial Plan. While battery storage is growing quickly, it will not suffice by itself: a range of LDES technologies is needed to cover all intra-day, multi-day, and seasonal storage needs.
Future Cleantech Architects co-hosted a second workshop on LDES market design and industrial policy for innovators together with Breakthrough Energy and EASE to further analyze previous results. Based on the discussions, we have compiled 10 specific policy asks to support and amplify the efforts needed on long duration energy storage to guarantee energy security alongside Europe’s decarbonization plan.
