During the Future Cleantech Festival, our Cleantech Analyst Ingrid El Helou was interviewed by Kira Taylor for last week’s edition of The Jolt podcast on decarbonizing aviation, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), and Book and Claim. You can find an excerpt of the interview below!
“We think that [Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs)] will play the biggest part in the decarbonization of the sector by 2050. And that is because you can use them straight in a plane now; they are considered ‘drop-in’ fuels, so you would not have to alter your design or make any modifications to the engine for it to be able to operate on sustainable aviation fuels. (…)
ReFuel EU Aviation, a major milestone for decarbonizing aviation in the EU, is all about progressively increasing targets for SAFs in the final fuel mix in the EU. And this is very important because the EU has a very dynamic aviation sector. (…) About 10 to 15% of global annual jet fuel is consumed in the EU. So we have this regulation, we consume a lot of jet fuel, and we need to replace that jet fuel with SAFs now. Except, production is still very low, about less than 1% in the EU. (…) So you have concentrated locations with high demand for jet fuel that might not be close to where the SAFs are being produced. For this, you create this kind of book and claim system, where you can get into agreements with fuel suppliers, pay the premium for the SAFs, and claim its use, even though they are not actually getting on the plane.”
