Future Cleantech Architects and eight other cleantech organizations are calling on the European Commission to explicitly recognize the role of LDES, and in particular thermal energy storage, in Europe’s upcoming Electrification Action Plan and energy security framework.
Europe is rapidly electrifying its industry (heat), transport, heating, cooling, and digital infrastructure, increasing the need for flexibility. LDES can shift renewable electricity not only across hours, but across days, weeks, and even seasons.
LDES can:
- Reduce dependence on fossil reserves
- Improve grid resilience
- Support industrial electrification
- Strengthen Europe’s energy security.
LDES is also an industrial opportunity. Many LDES technologies and supply chains are already rooted in Europe.
The joint letter calls for:
- Explicit recognition of LDES in EU energy policy.
- An EU roadmap for long-duration flexibility.
- Lead markets for deployment.
- Investment frameworks that improve bankability.
