Europe must complement solar and wind with long-duration energy storage and clean firm power technologies, such as next-generation geothermal, hydropower, and nuclear power.
Solar and wind power – along with batteries, smart grids, and innovative renewable energy technologies – can meet Europe’s electricity needs affordably throughout much of the year
In this new reality, other clean energy sources can no longer compete only by providing baseload energy. Instead, they need to provide dispatchable (flexible) energy when solar, wind, and batteries are insufficient. Without such clean firm power, the EU risks higher costs, continued reliance on fossil backup, and slower industrial decarbonization.
