Europe has abundant clean energy at its feet, will policymakers seize it?
Next-generation geothermal energy, enabled by advanced deep drilling technologies, could generate up to 301 TWh annually in the EU. The technical potential is estimated at nearly 40 TW — roughly 35 times Europe’s current installed electricity capacity.
Together with Cleantech for Europe and EGEC Geothermal, FCA has brought together a coalition of nearly 70 businesses, investors, think tanks, and civil society organizations calling for a stronger EU framework to unlock next-generation geothermal for both heat and electricity.
Deep geothermal can provide a domestic source of reliable, 24/7 clean energy across many Member States, helping to:
- complement wind and solar.
- strengthen Europe’s energy security.
- boost industrial competitiveness.
- reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels
This is a critical moment to position geothermal as a core pillar of Europe’s clean industrial strategy.
