How can the EU turn the 5% target for innovative renewables from a symbolic provision into a real scaling instrument?
Our recent analysis of 10 National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) found limited operationalization of the 5% target, no harmonized definition of “innovative renewables,” and weak integration beyond 2030.
Since this target represents a major opportunity to accelerate next-generation renewable technologies — critical for Europe’s long-term climate and energy goals.
Together with partner organizations, we sent a letter to Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera, Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, and Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (European Commission), acalling for a stronger framework for the 5% innovation target, including its integration into the future Governance Regulation.
Innovative renewables will be essential to deliver on Europe’s priorities: energy security, system flexibility, competitiveness, and avoiding the worst impacts of climate change.
